Think Spring: Tips for Getting Your Skin Spring-Ready

Posted on

Now that Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow and the promise of spring beckons, this article highlights some tips for getting skin spring-ready. Spring skin care routines should be different than those followed during the winter months. This is especially true in areas where there are noticeable weather changes that can dramatically affect the skin. The following are some tips for getting skin fresh and beautiful for spring.

1. Hydrate the Skin
After experiencing the dry air associated with colder weather it is important to make sure the skin is completely hydrated. Products containing natural ingredients, such as coconut oil, are great for hydration and softness. It is also recommended to use lighter moisturizer during the spring and summer months. Air is generally more humid in the spring and it's necessary to use a moisturizer that allows skin to breathe. Eating foods high in water content is not only good for the inside of the body but for the skin as well. Cucumbers and celery are a few healthy veggies that contain lots of water.

2. Exfoliate Properly
According to aesthetician Sonya Dakar, exfoliating is important for keeping skin looking great during warmer weather because an individual sheds more skin during the spring and summer months. Exfoliating more frequently will help prevent the dead skin cells from clogging pores. It's best to use a dry brush and exfoliating gloves. Even a clean washcloth is better than a loofah which can contain excessive bacteria. It's important to apply a tonic and then moisturize soon after the exfoliating process.

3. Remove Unwanted Hair
Spring is the time for shorts, mini-skirts, and fun sandals. This means skin should be smooth and as hair-free as possible. There are several options available for removing hair from the legs, underarms, face, and the bikini area. Shaving, hair removal creams, and wax strips are all options that can be used at home. Laser hair removal and salon waxing, however, are considered the gold standard for clean, long-lasting hair removal. The Mayo Clinic recommends finding someone who is board-certified in either cosmetic surgery or dermatology when considering laser hair removal.

4. Purchase New Sunscreen
While sunscreen is needed for healthy skin year-round, it's more important than ever to use protection during spring and summer. Getting skin spring-ready means checking to make sure sunscreen hasn't expired. Expiration dates on lip balm and other skin products that have SPF protection should also be checked. Since more skin is exposed during the warmer weather it's important to make sure all exposed areas are covered with sunscreen.

5. Update Make-up
Going through the make-up drawer should be on everyone's spring cleaning list. Not only does make-up get old, but spring colors and tones are different than what is normally worn during the winter months. Update with light, bright colors. While pastels and light pinks always look great for spring, there are some bolder trends leading the way for 2016. A few include candy apple lipstick and smoky colors for eyes.

Following these steps can help skin become fresh and pretty for the spring.
