We caught up with Shiva Rose to ask her about natural skin care that leads to the most radiant and healthy skin imaginable without using harsh chemicals.
You have a video on The Local Rose that details ways to avoid harsh chemicals in skin care products. What are a few common chemicals that people should be on the lookout for?
There are so many chemicals that we need to stay away from. The most common are phthalates and parabens. These are linked to terrible health issues including cancer. Some other hormone disrupters are propyl parabens and acetates.
Astringents can often possess harsh chemicals that scour the skin. Can you recommend a few holistic alternatives to your typical face wash and tell us what is good about them?
Fruit has amazing qualities that act as a natural astringent; pineapple is one example. Sage, witch hazel, and apple cider vinegar all balance the PH in skin and have astringent properties.
Wrinkles are a common concern of skin care which often requires very unnatural products and ingredients. Do you know of any more naturalistic remedies that can be just as effective?
So many wonderful oils can be used for preventing wrinkles, like sea buckthorn, jojoba, and carrot seed oil.
For chronic or recurring skin problems such as acne, do you know of any products or techniques that can help without having to use them every day?
Acne sometimes is related to the gut. Eating healthy with lots of vegetables and fruits and adding probiotics to the diet can help a lot. Also, toning the skin with aloe and apple cider vinegar can help acne.
You wrote a post on The Local Rose about superfoods that will make someone's skin glow. How important is diet to natural skin care? And what are a few foods that are particularly good for healthy skin?
Diet is absolutely important for clear skin! Drinking water with lemon can do wonders. Foods with high antioxidants like blueberries and raspberries are great too. A spoonful of coconut oil or ghee can also help with balancing.
Unnatural products can also be harmful to the environment, to animals, and to society as well. How are natural beauty products beneficial not only to someone's health, but also to the world at large?
We must change the way we treat ourselves and our planet. The more we refuse to use toxic chemicals and overuse plastic, the better we will feel. So many of us are getting ill from the chemicals, and these ailments are showing up in our skin first. It's time to wake up and use natural ingredients.
