Expert Interview Series: Jeanne Kissman on Caring for Dry Skin

Posted on

When she moved to a desert climate in 1999, Jeanne Kissman's skin was not happy. So she started experimenting with natural remedies in her kitchen to help combat the drying effects of the arid air on her skin. Eventually, she discovered that natural oils and exfoliating sugar body scrubs were the key to counteracting the dry climate.

Caring for dry skinToday, she sells natural skincare products through her brand, PlumHill Pure Body Essentials. We recently checked in with Jeanne to get more of her advice on dealing with dry skin. Here's what she had to say:

Why are you so passionate about natural products?

Because they work!

Please read your labels; there's a lot of commercial product list ingredients you don't understand. When it's a natural or organic product, you should be able to understand each ingredient you are applying to your skin.

Why do you steer clear of commercially made beauty/skincare products?

Commercial products have too many preservatives, parabens and colors.

What are your favorite natural remedies for combating dry skin?

Easy! Use a gentle moisture cleanser, exfoliate to remove dry skin every other day, and apply natural body oil while your skin is still damp and your pores are open for it to absorb. I actually apply as soon as I turn my shower off, let it soak it for a few minutes, and then pat dry. You can also add a couple drops to your bath water.

And you're good for the day!

What ingredients should people dealing with dry skin avoid?

Alcohol - it is very drying.

What do you like to do when you want to pamper your skin?

I love microdermabrasions as a treat for my face.

The other is pampering my feet, I'll take time to exfoliate my feet, followed by Shea body butter. Add socks till the body butter absorbs; your feet will love you for it!

What natural ingredients do you think everyone should look for in their products?

Look for ingredients you understand.

What are their benefits?

You know what's going on your body. Natural products work and are not harmful to you.
