11 Smart Treatments for Male Pattern Baldness

Posted on

Male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in men. It takes between 15 to 25 years for men to go bald, but some completely lose their hair in less than five years.

Genetics, hormonal changes, and medical conditions cause male pattern baldness. There are men who are proud of their clean shaven heads, but there are also those who are concerned about keeping their hair. There are different smart treatments that encourage hair to grow and let you keep as much hair as you can as possible.

1. Take finasteride

Finasteride is the generic name for Propecia and Proscar. It is a drug used to treat the prostate glands until it was discovered that one of its side effects is hair growth.

Propecia is the first drug approved by the FDA to treat male pattern baldness. 90% of men use it and it works by inhibiting the body from producing an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone into androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which shrinks hair follicles that lead to balding.

Finasteride is available as a pill taken once a day.

2. Use minoxidil

Minoxidil is a drug for hypertension with hair growth as one of the side effects. Doctors recommended that minoxidil should be applied on the scalp after they found out that people who were taking it as a pill grew hair in unusual places like on their cheeks and forehead.

Minoxidil is available under the brand name Rogaine and Theroxidil as foam and liquid in 2% and 5% strength formulas. It is applied on dry scalp areas where hair is thinning out. It usually takes four months to see changes.

3. Try ketoconazole

Ketoconazole is an anti-fungal medication for dandruff. It is used as a treatment for male pattern baldness because it reduces the production of testosterone and DHT in the hair follicles.

A study in 2005 showed that treating dandruff accompanied by male pattern baldness using ketoconazole is an effective solution. The study also found that it helped stimulate hair growth.

Nizoral is the only non-prescription shampoo brand that contains ketoconazole. Use only a small amount at least twice a week and do not use more than what is prescribed as it makes hair dry and coarse. Men who are on finasteride or minoxidil are also advised to use ketoconazole because if you have dandruff, the effects of the said drugs will not penetrate deeply into the scalp.

4. Switch to formulated shampoos

Look for shampoos that are formulated to revive hair follicles and reverse hair loss. There are shampoos that contain natural extracts like noni, which is known to encourage hair growth and slow down hair loss.

A challenge for men trying to grow their hair is their hair follicles are blocked by oil or sebum. Biconi Hair Rejuvenating Shampoo Bar may make your head temporarily oily as it unblocks pores, but bringing the scalp back to its good condition helps stimulate hair growth.

5. Rinse hair with onion juice

Onion is rich in sulfur, which is one of the building blocks of hair. When applied on the scalp, it improves blood circulation to the hair follicles, making it sufficiently sustained with nutrients that have been blocked by DHT sensitivity. This leads to a more natural hair growth.

Onions as a hair loss treatment was studied in 2002. Onion juice was applied daily on the scalp for two months and the results were compared with those who only used tap water. Onion juice presented better results than tap water.

Make your onion juice by peeling onions and chopping it into small pieces. Extract its juice with a food processor and use it to rinse your hair and cover bald patches on your scalp.

6. Massage your scalp

Massaging the scalp increases blood flow to the surface of the skin, which encourages hair growth.

Use your favorite essential oil on your scalp and massage it in circular motions for at least ten minutes. Remove the oil with shampoo and water. You may need to wash your scalp twice until the oily feeling is fully removed. You can also use onion juice as an alternative to oil if you wish.

Aside from increasing blood flow to hair follicles, this massage nourishes the scalp, enhances the strength of the roots, and reduces conditions that compromise hair growth like dandruff and dry skin.

7. Eat healthy food

Hair is made of mostly protein, which means it needs protein to grow. Choose lean proteins over ones that are high in fat to get the full benefits for your hair and also your body. Fish, eggs, chicken, and beans are amazing sources of good protein plus soy milk, low-fat cheese, yogurt, and liver.

Squash, seafood, nuts, whole grains, and dark leafy vegetables are rich in iron and zinc that carry blood to your organs. Blood circulation activates hair follicles and delivers nutrients and oxygen to your hair.

A balanced diet is essential to your hair and to your overall health. Avoid protein-deficient diets that will only speed up the balding process.

8. Drink plenty of water

If you are not hydrated enough, this prevents the hair shaft, which is composed of one quarter of water from flourishing. Stay well-hydrated and aim for 8 glasses of water per day. Drink more if you exercise or if it is hot. Limit your caffeine intake too as these remove needed water from your body.

9. Manage your stress

Seeing hair thinning and falling out can be a cause of concern for men, leading to anxiety and stress. Although stress and androgenic alopecia are not related, stress can still advance hair loss. Keep your hair by managing your stress. Exercise, relax, meditate, and have a positive attitude.

10. Schedule a hair transplant

Hair transplants may be invasive and more expensive compared to other treatments, but it can grow your hair back and make it look more natural and permanent.

A hair transplant works by taking hair from the areas of your scalp with active hair and placing it in balding areas. Several sessions may be needed to see results.

11. Consider laser treatments

Low-level laser therapy uses devices with diodes that release red light. These are available in salon hoods and overhead panels or as a bonnet or a head cap. It is believed that low-level laser therapy increases blood flow in the scalp, resulting into activated hair follicles and nutrients and oxygen reaching the hair. It also prevents excessive production of DHT, which is the leading cause of male pattern baldness.
